Sky, an avid programmer, is majoring in Computer Science at IU. The Ignatian quote “Go forth, set the world on fire” drives his mission to spread his zeal for community-building. His most important value, guiding his academic and personal endeavors, is to exceed expectations and become the best version of himself.
2024 Wells Scholars
Emma, who will major in International Studies, is most proud of her personal growth throughout high school, particularly during her junior and senior years. Her achievements, including being Head Yearbook Photographer for two years, highlight her dedication and determination. She lives by a quote from the Tao Te Ching, “The wise man is one who knows what he doesn’t know.”
Guided by his parents’ kindness and compassion, Liam is driven to pursue Policy Analysis as his major, which will prepare him for a profession in which he can help others. Empathy and compassion are central to Liam’s values, as he believes in leading with kindness and understanding. A visit to IU, where he attended a soccer game with his dad, was a significant experience that made him feel part of the IU community and solidified his decision to join it.
Ella is from Tennessee and plans to major in both American Studies and Journalism. She is inspired by Neil Gaiman’s quote from Good Omens about understanding human complexity, which guides her approach to communication and journalism: “It may help to understand human affairs to be clear that most of the great triumphs and tragedies of history are caused, not by people being fundamentally good or fundamentally bad, but by people being fundamentally people.” Ella values authenticity, believing that living sincerely and building true connections are essential for personal and communal betterment.
Caroline plans to major in Anthropology on a pre-medicine track. Their passion for medicine began in high school when an interest in clinical presentations of narcolepsy led to an epiphany about pursuing a career in biology and anatomy. The best advice Caroline has received is to take breaks to prevent burnout, highlighting the importance of self-care for long-term well-being.
Caitlyn is from Indianapolis, Indiana and plans to study Political Science. She is most proud of her work with Timmy Global Health, which included a service trip to the Dominican Republic. Empathy is Caitlyn’s most important value, as she believes in treating people with kindness and grace. Caitlyn’s happy place is on stage, acting in plays and musicals, where she loves exploring new characters and collaborating with others.
Claire is an incoming Linguistics and International Studies major. She proudly won 1st place in Informative Speaking at the 2024 Montana State Speech and Debate Tournament, where she delivered a speech on the history of human language. Claire, an avid collector of vinyl records, is eager to explore Bloomington’s record shops and local music scene.
At IU, Manav plans to major in Biotechnology on a pre-med track. In his hierarchy of values, new experiences top the list. Manav finds joy in engaging in new activities with friends and family, whether it’s exploring a new country or spending time at a national park.
Elena, majoring in Environmental Sustainability Studies and International Law, is most proud of being named a 2024 Hoosier Resilience Hero for her efforts in climate action. She also directed the Youth Environmental Press Team’s first print publication on environmentalism and made progress on the Climate Recovery Resolution with the city council and mayor in Elkhart, Indiana. The Wells Scholars Program Interview Weekend made her excited about starting college, appreciating the community and the genuine love of learning among scholars.
Hamza is an incoming Cognitive Science major whose daily life is shaped by his faith community, the Quran, and the model of his Prophet, all of which motivate him to do good for the sake of God. One of his guiding quotes is by Martin Luther King Jr.: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice,” which reminds him that despite the world’s injustices, progress towards a better world is ongoing.
Growing up in Bloomington, Anson embraced IU since it allows her to stay close to her three younger sisters while exploring international study programs and engaging with the Wells Scholars Program. She values problem-solving, a skill honed by her father’s encouragement to approach challenges with creativity and empathy. Anson is majoring in Business Management, International Business, and LEAD, with a minor in Spanish.
Elliot intends to major in International Law and Institutions. The best advice he has received is to try new things, which led to his passion for international topics. Elliot is most proud of his role as a voting member on the Alexandria City Public Schools Advisory Committee for Environmental Sustainability, which allowed him to combat climate change within his community.
Connor is most proud of co-founding his high school association for children with autism, which allowed him to connect with his community and make a tangible impact at Lighthouse Autism Centers. Fiercely committed to helping people, Connor traces this interest back to volunteering at a food bank. This experience ignited his dedication to making a career out of keeping others healthy as a pre-medical student.
Lucy plans to study Ballet and Psychology. Ballet has been a significant part of her life since she started at the age of three, teaching her to channel her energy into a disciplined art form. She draws inspiration from the performances she watches, the books she reads, and the music she listens to, particularly admiring the courage of artists who share their innermost selves with the world.
