Emma is most proud of her personal growth throughout high school, particularly during her junior and senior years. Her experiences, such as stepping out of her comfort zone to visit the Pine Ridge Reservation and developing meaningful friendships, have significantly shaped her into a more open, compassionate, and determined individual. Her achievements, including being Head Yearbook Photographer for two years, receiving the Wells Scholarship, and winning the “Grad at Grad” award, highlight her dedication and growth. Inspired daily by her mother’s kindness and hard work, Emma admires her ability to balance being a brilliant doctor with selfless acts of compassion.
Emma’s favorite books, The Secret History and The Little Friend by Donna Tartt, and The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, deeply influence her, immersing her in beautifully written worlds that shape her perspective on morality and mortality. A quote from the Tao Te Ching, “The wise man is one who knows what he does not know,” resonates with her, encouraging acceptance of life’s uncertainties and fostering a mindset open to change. The best advice she has received, “Soak it all up,” emphasizes the importance of living in the moment and cherishing relationships.
Emma’s “happy place” is her great-grandmother’s house in the rural Ozarks of Arkansas, a peaceful retreat where her family spends time playing games, hiking, and enjoying each other’s company. The serene environment offers her a complete escape from the stress of daily life. Emma plans to major in International Studies and will hold the Robert Gates Scholarship and the Sigma Nu Fraternity Scholarship.
