This collaboration with the prestigious IUB Maurer School of Law seeks to provide talented Wells Scholars interested in the study of law with an accelerated path towards obtaining a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from one of the nation’s top public law schools at an affordable rate with a generous minimum guaranteed scholarship, a mentorship program, and other special opportunities. Successful graduates of the program would receive their bachelor’s and JD degrees in just 6 years (3 years undergraduate + 3 years law school) instead of the more usual 7 (4+3).

Current Scholars interested in this program then self-identify to WSP faculty and staff during their freshman or sophomore years. There is no requirement for prospective Wells Scholars to indicate interest in their nomination file or Admissions portfolio as an incoming freshman, though students may mention this if they wish. The program is available to both Indiana residents and out-of-state students.
Scholars interested in pursuing this program should be on track to finish their bachelor’s degree requirements by the end of their third year of undergraduate study. The accelerated pace of study is generally not a problem for Scholars who enter IU with AP or other advanced credit from high school, and/or who take a few summer classes.
Interested Scholars would apply to Maurer during their junior year and must fulfill all criteria for admission into the Maurer School of Law following their standard admission procedures, including exemplary performance in rigorous undergraduate courses, letters of recommendation, LSAT scores, and more. If accepted to Maurer and the 3+3 program, Scholars would begin their JD studies during what would have been their senior year.
The Wells Scholars Program will guarantee the full cost of attendance at IUB as usual for Years 1-3 (freshman, sophomore, and junior years). WSP and Maurer provide joint financial assistance during Year 4, the first year of law school, to cover the regular WSP living stipend and a significant tuition discount to Maurer. WSP funding ceases for Years 5-6, and Maurer continues to provide a significant tuition discount and a small living stipend. Further funding may also be available through Maurer. The total scholarship package equals approximately a full ride for undergraduate students and at least a 50% total savings off the cost of law school tuition.

This joint endeavor with the internationally-acclaimed IUB Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies seeks to provide high-achieving Wells Scholars with an accelerated pathway to earn B.A. and M.A. degrees in International Studies supported by substantial scholarship assistance in just five years, instead of the more usual six years.

Current Scholars will express their interest in this degree to WSP faculty and staff during their freshman or sophomore years, and additionally apply for admission to the joint B.A./M.A. program in the spring of their sophomore year. In order to be most successful, students are encouraged to consult with the International Studies Department’s academic advisors in their freshman year to ensure they fulfill all eligibility criteria. There is no requirement for prospective Wells Scholars to indicate interest in their nomination file or Admissions portfolio as an incoming freshman, though students may mention this if they wish. The program is available to both Indiana residents and out-of-state students.
Successful candidates would be guaranteed the full cost of attendance at IUB for Years 1-4 through the WSP as usual. HLS would then award these students with a Global Leadership Scholars Fellowship during Year 5 to cover full graduate tuition for Indiana residents, or the equivalent off in-state tuition for non-residents. Additionally, each successful applicant will receive a small living stipend from HLS.
