Elena, majoring in Environmental Sustainability Studies and International Law, is most proud of being named a 2024 Hoosier Resilience Hero for her efforts in climate action. She also directed the Youth Environmental Press Team’s first print publication on environmentalism and made progress on the Climate Recovery Resolution with the city council and mayor in Elkhart.
Her favorite quote, “Love is the only rational act” by Mitch Albom, reflects her passion for writing and connecting with people, and sharing her deep love of the environment. She enjoys interviewing others, learning what they’re passionate about, and amplifying their voices in turn.
The Wells Scholars Program interview weekend made her excited about starting college, appreciating the community and the genuine love of learning among scholars.
Her happy place is South Bend’s St. Patrick’s County Park, where she finds solace in nature. Elena believes in maintaining a childlike curiosity and joy throughout life. She will hold the J. Peter Grace Scholarship and the Nycha Schlegel & Bill Loos Scholarship.
