Hamza is an incoming Cognitive Science major whose daily life is deeply inspired by his religion. The influence of his faith community, the Quran, and the model of his Prophet motivate him to do good for the sake of God, shaping his character and actions.
Hamza’s favorite author is Ray Bradbury, particularly for the captivating stories in The Illustrated Man. One of his guiding quotes is by Martin Luther King Jr.: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice,” which reminds him that despite the world’s injustices, progress towards a better world is ongoing.
The best advice Hamza has received is to choose good friends, believing that personal growth is greatly influenced by those we surround ourselves with. His “happy place” is any decent fast-food spot within five miles of his house, where late-night meals from places like Taco Bell bring him joy and fond memories.
In his hierarchy of values, humility stands out the most. He believes that arrogance is the root of all vices, and maintaining humility keeps him grounded and reassured. Hamza also has a passion for miniature wargaming, a hobby he discovered by chance, which involves building, painting, and playing with sci-fi soldiers. This intricate and artistic activity has provided him with hours of enjoyment and creative expression. Hamza will hold the Anderson Foundation Scholarship and the J. Bruce & Helen F. Merritt Scholarship.
