Natalie Carlson

Woman with long blond hair and wearing a white dress shirt smiling against a background of greenery
Pronouns:
She/Her

Natalie is from Indianapolis and plans to double-major in International Studies and Hispanic linguistics. She is most proud of composing her extended essay (about the songs used by the Spanish countercultural movement La Movida Madrileña) entirely in Spanish. Natalie writes, “I love thinking about how culture is reflected in the arts and how it is interpreted today.” She looks forward to learning from people at IU who are as passionate as she is and hopes to study in a Latin American country such as the Dominican Republic. She lives by the motto: “The same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg; it's about what you're made of, not the circumstances.” Natalie’s most important value is consistency: “Showing up for yourself and others is the best way to show gratitude to the people that have loved and supported you.” Natalie would like to thank her coach, Melody Groothuis, who “inspired me to give more grace, be consistent to achieve my goals, and enjoy what I do.” Natalie will hold the Elizabeth Kelsey Deer Scholarship.
