Karin, who comes from Istanbul, Turkey, will major in psychology. Her favorite writer is Ursula Le Guin because her work explores “unapologetic, thought-provoking criticisms, disguised in mythic, artistic concepts, regarding prevalent issues such as gender, discriminatory politics, and censorship which have always been a source of inspiration for me.” Other books she turns to are Natsuo Kirino’s The Goddess Chronicle, Ursula Le Guin’s Lavinia, and Euripides’ Electra. Her favorite quote comes from Haruko Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore: “It's hard to tell the difference between sea and sky, between voyager and sea, between reality and the workings of the heart.” Her favorite place to be is the garden of her grandparents’ house, “where the wind smells of the sea, where all my favorite foods are set up on the table, and where I feel free to dream as wildly as I once could as a child.” Karin would like to thank her counselor, Mr. Hearn, who has helped her throughout high school and was even more excited than her at the news of her college acceptances, and her friends Kaan, Alperen, Kıvanç, Kayrahan, Emir, Anıl, and Sarah, who pulled through the college applications process with her and are all now setting off to amazing futures of their own. Regarding her decision to come to IU, Karin offers the following: “During my university application process, my country faced a devastating earthquake. Afterward, almost all the universities I applied to were silent about this tragedy and the subject didn't even come up during the interviews. Except for IU. They contacted me on multiple occasions to inquire about my well-being and even offered to push back my interview if I wasn't in a state to conduct it. Later, I found out more about their efforts to help. I can say this sensitivity was one of the things that impacted me the most.”Karin’s primary value is “loyalty, whether it is to a goal, a person, a promise, or myself.” Karin will hold the Edmund A. Schroer Scholarship.
