Nina Castro-Sauer

Nina Castro-Sauer
Hometown:
Bloomington, IN

Biography

Nina, a rising junior, is majoring in international studies and minoring in Portuguese and hopes to pursue a career working for a nonprofit or other NGO focusing on rural and indigenous communities with specific emphasis on sustainable development projects centered around infrastructure and resource management. She loves IU for its diverse academic options and decided to come here even after growing up in Bloomington because she wanted to experience the town in a new way. Her two favorite places are her grandmother’s mango farm in Brazil and downtown Bloomington in the summer, and she would one day like to visit Montenegro to explore the diverse landscape wedged between mountains and the coast of the Adriatic Sea and enjoy its outdoor activities and sightseeing. Nina’s three favorite books are Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, Submarine by Joe Dunthorne, The Collapse of Western Civilization: A View from the Future by Erik M. Conway and Naomi Oreskes, and her secret talent is that she can juggle! She’d like to thank her parents for always supporting her in whatever endeavors she chooses to pursue, for encouraging her to live day by day and figure things out along the way, and for reminding her that as long as she’s happy, she’s doing something right. She will hold the Virgil DeVault and Breon Mitchell scholarships.
