Biography
Andre was on track to play college basketball and being recruited by several Division I programs when he came across Ben Carson’s autobiography Gifted Hands and decided to study medicine instead. Within two years he was majoring in biology and had worked hard enough in school to follow in Dr. Carson’s footsteps and earn a spot doing research at Johns Hopkins for a summer. He chose IU originally for its rich traditions and rigorous academics. He has meanwhile come to appreciate IU’s exceptional faculty, who are truly interested in building lasting and meaningful relationships and helping him flourish as a young scholar and as an individual. Andre will never completely leave basketball behind and plans to retire from medicine to live somewhere warm and sit courtside at NBA games. He’ll also always follow the advice he received from his high school coach to “do anything how you do everything,” i.e., don’t neglect the small details and treat everyone with equal dignity. He is fond of using long summer evening walks to reflect on life, reevaluate his goals, dwell on gratitude, and slow down in this busy and distracting world. He will hold the Urcel Daniel #2 scholarship.
