A veritable quiz whiz, Spencer captained his high school Quiz Bowl team and led them to victory at both state championships this year. As evidenced by these triumphs, Spencer is knowledgeable on and interested in a wide variety of subjects, from the music of Icelandic star Björk to the novels of Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. Not surprisingly, he hopes to major in anthropology and sample a potpourri of other classes, and greatly looks forward to the cultural and intellectual diversity that IU fosters. When he is not reading or listening to music, Spencer can often be found wandering in his “happy place”: the forested parks of his hometown. Lucky acquaintances are treated to orange-spice cookies from Spencer’s own secret recipe, perhaps inspired by his favorite TV shows starring celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. Spencer joins us as the seventh Scholar from Zionsville Community High School. He would like to thank Ms. Clark and Ms. Bing for writing the letters of recommendation that helped him receive this scholarship.

Spencer will hold the James and Virginia Cozad and Ellsworth A. and Louise Schan scholarships.
