- He/Him
Enrique comes from Ensenada, Mexico, and plans to major in anthropology. He looks forward to learning new languages at IU, such as Maya and German, and he is especially excited about studying abroad, starting a research project focused on Indigenous communities and generally stepping out of his comfort zone by trying new things. If Enrique could have dinner with a historical figure, he would choose the poet Guadalupe Teresa Amor Schmidtlein, known as “Pita Amor,” an early activist for women’s liberation in 1950s Mexico, because “she always challenged and questioned social stereotypes.” Growing up in a small rural community has shaped Enrique’s thinking and the way he perceives the world. During the pandemic, Enrique created a bioplastic using fruit peel and established an organization focused on providing people with free environmental education, an initiative recognized with the Mexican Youth Award for Environmental Protection. Enrique regards the world as his happy place and writes: “Simple things like taking the wrong bus, feeding a dog, petting a cat, meeting new people, witnessing a sunset, and trying new things make me happy. These are experiences I can have anywhere and at any time.”Enrique will hold the City Securities Corporation Scholarship.
