Anna is from Farmington Hills, Michigan, and plans to study neuroscience at Indiana University, while also pursuing her other interests in biotechnology and healthcare management and policy. She chose IU because of the strong support and network it provides.Anna is most proud of receiving her high school’s Madame Curie award for strengths in science and mathematics. Her inspiration is the writer Maya Angelou, who appeals to her because of her resilient character and wisdom. Not surprisingly, Maya Angelou’s autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, is a favorite, along with Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried and Kamala Shamsie’s Home Fire. Anna is inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.’s reminder that“injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” She believes that “everything happens for a reason” and that, “even when it feels difficult, eventually, you'll end up right where you're supposed to be.” Anna would like to thank her high school chemistry teacher, Charles Stewart, for always giving her confidence in her strengths and being the most supportive teacher,she has ever had.She would also like to acknowledge her parents for their help and constant guidance. The most impactful experience of her childhood was watching her mother battle cancer and everyone around her rise to the occasion. “I am more resilient, mindful, and humble because of her and her strength.”Her study abroad plans are still in flux, but she knows that she wants to go to a country where she will be able to study health care policy. Her most important valueis honesty, and she always strives to be the most authentic version of herself. Anna will hold the M. Phil and Margaret Hathaway Scholarship.
