Alejandra is from Guadalajara, Mexico, and will study biotechnology at IU, with a possible minor in environmental science. She loves how IU has made her feel welcome and she looks forward to making it her home. Alejandra anticipates getting involved in undergraduate research, working for the IU Journal of Undergraduate Research, and pursuing many extracurricular activities. Her shelf of treasured books includes Randy Pausch’s Last Lecture, Iain S. Thomas’ Every Word You Cannot Say, and Patrick Rothfuss’ The Name of the Wind. A quote that resonates with her is Henry David Thoreau’s statement from Walden: “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately... I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life... to put rout to all that was not life; and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” Alejandra notes: “What would life be if we didn’t let ourselves be surprised by the perfection of nature and the beauty of our own existence.” She is most happy when she is in her kayak, in the middle of Lake Chapala, playing her guitar, watching the world beyond the hills disappear. Alejandra’s father keeps saying to her: “Be willing to try new things,” and that is the motto she lives by. Trying new things, Alejandra has discovered new passions and felt encouraged to step out of her comfort zone. Alejandra is especially grateful to her philosophy professor Karla Díaz, whose immense passion for teaching has changed her perception of life: “Thanks to her, I discovered the art of questioning the world around me.” Honesty is Alejandra's most important value since it is fundamental to all we do in life. Alejandra will hold the Miles and Marjorie Kanne Scholarship and the R.L. Shoemaker/Mid-Century Club Scholarship.
