Wisdom Ibikunle

Hometown:
Munster, IN

Wisdom (she/her) is a rising senior at Indiana University studying chemistry and sociology. Wisdom, who conceived a mental health awareness campaign during IU’s 2022 “care week,” currently serves as the co-president of IU’s “U Bring Change to Mind.” Her model is Jocelyn Elders, Surgeon General under Bill Clinton and the first Black Surgeon General in the United States, who was forced to resign over her forward-looking advocacy for “taboo” topics such as the legalization of drugs and comprehensive sex education. Wisdom’s favorite quote, “comparison is the thief of joy,” is a reminder to herself to be proud of her own achievements. Wisdom’s happy place is the kitchen, where she recreates desserts she has tried in restaurants and learns how to cook traditional Nigerian foods such as meat pies, jollof rice, and puff puff. Wisdom would like to thank her friends Annie, Sam, and Evan for helping her embrace imperfection, her older sister Blessing for her encouragement, and her professors at IU: Hall Bjørnstad, Tennisha Riley, Cate Reck, Amrita Myers, and Bernice Pescosolido, for cheering her on. In the Wells Scholars Program, she will hold the Jennings and Mentzer scholarships.
