Deo (she/her), from Nigeria, is planning to major in computer science, with a minor in film studies. At IU, she hopes to take advantage of all the opportunities a large campus has to offer while also making the most of the experience of living in a small, welcoming community such as the Wells Scholars Program. She counts becoming the head girl in her high school as one of her proudest achievements. Deo’s favorite books include Libba Bray’s The King of Crows, Marie Rutkoski’s The Midnight Lie, and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple. She is grateful to her tenth-grade Information and Communication Technology teacher for letting her spend hours in the computer lab after school. A hard worker, Deo treasures the memory of her mother receiving her PhD diploma. She looks forward to getting accustomed to her new environment and envisions studying abroad in the United Kingdom. Honesty is the value she prizes the most, but Deo also lives by Friedrich Nietzsche’s bold and forward-looking advice that “no artist tolerates reality.” In the Wells Scholars Program, she will hold the Virgil DeVault and Breon Mitchell scholarships.
