Grania Whelan

Portrait of Grania Whelan
Hometown:
Bloomington, IN

Grania (she/they) is a rising sophomore majoring in theatre & drama and English. While she finds it impossible to definitively determine her favorite books, three works she loves are Luster by Raven Leilani, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, and Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. They also would love to meet J.D. Salinger and try to convince him to allow them to write a screenplay and direct a film adaptation of The Catcher in the Rye! Grania is most proud of the wide range of theatre and film projects she has participated in, from professional regional musicals to IU Theatre and Media School productions. They would like to study abroad at the University of Kent in Canterbury and take courses in early English literature, and also at Dublin’s National Theatre School of Ireland to sample the unique performance and teaching styles in European theatre. As a lover of absurdism, Grania would also love to travel to Wonderland. Grania thanks their family for being so supportive of their academic and artistic pursuits, Professor Ansley Valentine for his guidance and support of their acting, and Professor Judith Brown for encouraging and challenging them in their writing. She will hold the Indiana Bell Telephone scholarship.
