Maria Amanda (she/her) joins the third class of international Scholars and is the first Scholar from Lincoln International Academy in Managua, Nicaragua. She will major in journalism with a concentration in public relations and minor in marketing. Coming to IU is a big leap outside of her comfort zone, but she is excited to meet people, experience new things, and face down challenges in order to grow and thrive. IU was her top choice because, unlike with other universities, she felt able to fully express herself and felt seen as an individual throughout the whole admissions process. Her favorite place in the world is anywhere waterside with her family, and she hopes to travel to Fiji one day to check out the beautiful beaches. She also plans to study abroad either in the UK or Spain. Maria Amanda’s three favorite books are The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, and The Jesuit Guide to Almost Everything by James Martin. She loves baking and currently specializes in apple pies. Maria Amanda would like to thank her parents for the love, care, support, and sacrifice they have dedicated toward their children’s achievements. She will hold the Hutton-Heim and Hutton Scholarship Fund scholarships.
