Nicholas Recktenwald

Nicholas Recktenwald
Hometown:
Louisville, KY

Biography

Nicholas is the sixth Scholar from duPont Manual High School and will study trumpet performance and jazz. He is looking forward to immersing himself in an environment where everyone cares deeply about self-improvement, even over competition with others. He hopes that his dual major will afford him great flexibility to pursue diverse career options, including playing in traditional symphony orchestras, recording for hip hop records, leading a big band, composing and arranging, or any other situation that calls for his service. A high point of his life was performing a demanding program with the National Youth Orchestra 2 in Carnegie Hall, which inspired him to make music the focus of his daily life. Right now, he is also working on a mediocre Louis Armstrong impression including the classic Somewhere over the Rainbow. Nicholas considers himself a beginner chef with only a few successfully reproduced dishes under his belt, but he can whip up a delicious beef roast with assorted roasted summer vegetables. He recommends asking him again in a year to see what improvements he has accomplished. He is also interested in vegetable gardening and plans to retire to a life dedicated to running performance venues and traveling the world making music, all combined with subsistence farming. Following valuable advice from his father, he finds great contentment in dedicating his life to making others’ lives better. He will hold the Neal Gilliatt scholarship.
