Biography
Hannah’s long, early hours in the percussion closet at her high school really paid off; she is proud to have earned school, local, and national awards in musical activities ranging from marching band and wind ensemble to theater, jazz and choir. She finds inspiration in the life and opus of Keiko Abe, one of the foremost female musicians and composers in the percussion world, and has already learned several of Abe’s pieces. She will double major in percussion performance and cognitive science and very much appreciates IU’s excellence in both musical instruction and rigorous academic study. She also has an interest in non-western music with a particular focus on Afro-Cuban styles, and would jump at a chance to travel to Cuba and study congas, timbales, drum-set, and the food! Hannah’s current movie of choice is Guardians of the Galaxy, and she also enjoys reading favorites like To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf, Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis, the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling. She would like to thank her mom for always being her best friend (and for her great cooking), her dad for teaching her humility and patience, her mentor and teacher Angela Kepley, and her grandpa, who has never doubted her for a second. Hannah is the first Scholar from Lyons Township High School and will hold the Edmund and Teresa Bruner scholarship.
