Simon Updegraff is majoring in Cello Performance and Applied Mathematics. He is most proud of co-founding Musicians for Hope, a non-profit organization that raises money for the music programs of underserved public schools. He has also served as first chair cello in the Illinois Honors All-State Orchestra, an achievement that reflects years of consistent effort and discipline. He began playing cello at age four and continues to value both the technical and expressive aspects of the instrument.
He draws daily inspiration from his sister, whom he admires for her kindness, confidence, and passion. Simon approaches challenges with the mindset of valuing the process over the outcome, a perspective that shapes both his academic work and musical practice.
Simon will hold the Krannert Charitable Trust Scholarship.
