IU appeals to Raul because of its emphasis on a broad education and diverse opportunities. Although he plans to major in astronomy and astrophysics with hopes of doing some kind of space research in the future, he looks forward to having the freedom to explore other interests as well. Raul is eager to travel to Central and South America, where he wants to visit the ruins of Machu Picchu and wishes it were possible to explore the Yucatan peninsula at the height of the Maya Empire. He is easy to spot by his lime green crocs (those he’ll never stop wearing, despite the protests of family and friends), and he can often be found perusing the shelves at Half-Price Books. His current favorite titles include Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, and Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson. Raul is proud to be the first person in his family to graduate from high school and enroll in college, having grown from a student who spoke no English to finishing at the top of his class. He’d like to thank his parents for their sacrifice of leaving their entire worlds behind to move to a new country in order to give him the best opportunities possible. He is the second Scholar from Perry Meridian High School and will hold the Wittman Family scholarship.
