Growing up, Emma always wanted to be a veterinarian and a singer. She still loves music and animals, but has shelved those professional aspirations in favor of a biology major concentrated on conservation and ecology. She credits a hard-earned, narrow win in Science Olympiad several years ago with fueling the motivation and passion for science that has driven her ever since. She’s excited to join IU and explore new subjects while meeting other people with shared interests. Emma wants to travel all over, from Senegal to Singapore, but plans to start in France in order to put her French studies to the test – and perhaps to sample the authentic version of tarte tatin, her favorite dish to bake. Once she has learned to perfect the recipe, she’ll retire and open a bakery with her friends. Until then, she relies on running to clear her head and relieve stress. She would like to thank her parents, who always know what they’re doing and have her best interests in mind; her teachers and Science Olympiad coaches for helping her realize and pursue her passion for science; and her friends, for their support and for making everything fun! Emma is the ninth Wells Scholar from Munster High School and will hold the Ross Jennings scholarship.
