Ava is the very first Wells Scholar from Baltimore City College. The decision to attend IU was an easy one, because both her parents attended and she found the current students and faculty to be extremely kind, interesting and genuine. Ava will major in journalism and is excited to spend her free time attending basketball games and operas. The wonderful school of music is another reason Ava chose IU, and her tastes run the full gamut from classical to Beyoncé! She is proud to have been awarded a Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship, which led to her spending her full junior year living with a host family in Germany and becoming fluent in German. She loves to cook butternut squash soup and especially enjoys eating doughnuts. Her current favorite books include William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, James Baldwin’s Collected Essays, and The World’s Religions by Huston Smith. Ava would like to thank her family and friends for always being there for her. She will hold the J. Dwight Peterson and Phoenix Newspapers scholarships.
