Make a gift
At its creation, the Wells Scholars Program endowment was thought to be sustainable, but that is not the case today. Several contributing factors play a role, including: a reduced return on the endowments investments and the rising expense of higher education in the U.S. In 1994-1995 the value of the scholarship supporting one in state student for a year was $2,988. Twenty years later, by 2014-2015 the amount more than doubled at $10,388. In recent years the program has made some significant administrative changes to help with scholarship expenses, but ongoing individual support remains essential.
Our goal is to increase the number of Wells Scholars Alumni contributing to the program and grow the amount of annual gifts to fully cover the cost of the program each year (when combined with its endowment income). In 2018, nearly 40% of alums made a contribution to the Program. Our long-term goal is for the program to be annually sustainable, ensuring current scholars are given the same experiences that shaped our alumni's paths in life.
Every gift matters, and combined alumni giving will make a significant difference for the program.
Become a leadership donor through the HBW Giving Society
Wells Scholars Alumni continue to contribute broadly across their fields and communities. Many alums chose to contribute financially to the Wells Scholars Program as an effort to pass along the culture of philanthropy they received while at IU to today's students. Leadership alumni gifts are recognized through the HBW Society.
