At its creation, the Wells Scholars Program endowment was thought to be sustainable, but that is not the case today. Several contributing factors play a role, including: a reduced return on the endowments investments and the rising expense of higher education in the U.S. In 1994-1995 the value of the scholarship supporting one in state student for a year was $2,988. Twenty years later, by 2014-2015 the amount more than doubled at $10,388. In recent years the program has made some significant administrative changes to help with scholarship expenses, but ongoing individual support remains essential.
Our goal is to increase the number of Wells Scholars Alumni contributing to the program and grow the amount of annual gifts to fully cover the cost of the program each year (when combined with its endowment income). Our long-term goal is for the program to be annually sustainable and current scholars are given the same experience that shaped so many alumni's paths in life.
Every gift matters, and combined alumni giving will make a significant difference for the program.
